ENGLISH TEACHER AND DEBATE COACH
St. Clement's School is currently looking for a qualified English Teacher and Debate Coach to join our School on a full-time basis commencing on August 25, 2025, with an orientation day on August 21, 2025.
The English Teacher and Debate Coach (Teacher) is passionate about making a difference in the lives of our students and is responsible for planning, preparing and implementing best practices in teaching English. In addition to teaching English, this role will have responsibility for overseeing the St. Clement's School Debate program. Our ideal candidate cares deeply about issues of social justice and demonstrates a willingness to incorporate this work into their curriculum. The Teacher will participate actively in staff, department and professional development meetings and other activities related to school life including support of our LINCWell initiatives to implement best practices to meet the individual needs of our students.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach English at the Intermediate/Senior level and additional courses which will be based on the qualifications and experience of the incumbent; Drama would be an asset;
- Design and develop unit plans to deliver curriculum that is challenging, creative, and that creates interdisciplinary connections;
- Support, supervise, and assess students and report on individual student achievement;
- Lead and develop the School's debate program, including coaching students in various debate formats and public speaking techniques;
- Work with students of varying experience levels, from beginners to advanced debaters to build confidence and excitement for participation up to refining technical debate strategies;
- Organize and oversee debate team practices; assist students in preparation for debate competitions and tournaments;
- Coordinate participation in regional, provincial, national, and international competitions;
- Manage debate program budget and resources;
- Provide and manage a safe, positive learning environment for our students to foster independent thinking skills and to develop critical reading, writing, and collaboration skills;
- Support families with open, ongoing communication about student progress;
- Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and grades; participate in department meetings and professional development days;
- Full participation and engagement in the life of the School;
- Coach, organize and/or participate in co-curricular trips and activities, which may fall before and after school hours and on weekends and may include occasional supervision of overnight student trips, both national and international; and
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES
- Bachelor of Education (or equivalent) with Ontario Teacher Qualifications (Intermediate/Senior), English Specialist;
- Registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT);
- Experience teaching Middle and/or Senior level English, with Drama an asset;
- Experience and comfort in providing rich inquiry-based learning opportunities;
- Fluent in equity literacy with the ability to recognize, respond to, and redress conditions that are inequitable, and actively demonstrate commitment to anti-oppression education;
- Experience coaching debate teams and/or participating in competitive debate is preferred;
- Knowledge of various debate formats (e.g., Parliamentary, Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum);
- Ability to teach research methods, argument construction, and public speaking skills;
- Experience judging debate competitions is an asset;
- Exploration and support of interdisciplinary and inquiry-based learning opportunities;
- Demonstrated ability to use and integrate technology to enhance learning;
- Excellent classroom management, organizational, and planning skills and experience in differentiating instruction;
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to work and plan in close collaboration with all constituents including colleagues, parents, and students;
- Commitment to co-curricular activities, coaching, and participation in school life;
- Strong leadership, communication, teamwork, and instructional skills;
- A record of encouraging, nurturing, and supporting students' love of learning;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to handle confidential material and situations with discretion and sensitivity.
- Work in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment as a supportive team player who is adaptable, able to learn quickly and think on their feet; and
- Clear criminal record check is required as a condition of employment.
